A history of the county of Ostholstein

The county of Ostholstein was constituted in 1970 from the two former counties Oldenburg and Eutin. The history of the two counties couldn`t have been more different. The area of the former county Oldenburg in Holstein was a part of the Dukedom Holstein. It constituded in 1867 and belonged to the Prussian State. Until 1921 the seat of the Executive clerk of the council was in Cismar, after this time in Oldenburg in Holstein. In the early days the county of Eutin belonged to the prince`s diocese of Lübeck. In 1803 it became as an exclave part of the Oldenburg duchy in Oldenburg.

Economic Ostholstein

Four colours are enough to describe our wonderful Ostholstein - green for the juicy meadows, clear blue for the water and the sky, red for the attractive brick buildings, yellow for the blossowing rape and the sun, which shines more often here than elsewhere - these colours paint Ostholstein in the most beautiful variations. The natural resources are the capital for a continual developement of the tourist industry, which is the pillar of the economy. Besides 34 spas and holiday centres there are 79 camping sites, most of them near the fine sandy beaches. This all attracts year after year more and more holidaymakers. Another increasingly popular way of spending a holiday is on a farm.Trade and craft businesses - all profit from tourism, making them stable economic factors in Ostholstein. Agriculture still dominates with its 1.600 farms the structure of our county but it is no longer the number one. There are a few traditional industries in Ostholstein, mainly dealing in food, electronics and medical technology. There are as well a few software firms, which operate internationally. There are plenty of attractive locations available where the spirit of enterprise can be refreshed. The best organisation to get in touch with is the „Developing company of Ostholstein“ (phone +49 4521 808-10). They also offer real help if you are starting up a new business.

  • day visitors. approximately 26.2 million (a careful guess)

Sightseeing in Ostholstein

Besides the baltic coast with its fine white sandy beaches there is also the hilly countryside with its numerous hedgeros, woods full of game and many small and big lakes. Not only the scenery delights us but also the many buildings and cultural monuments, many, many, recreational facilities, which are open the whole year, and last but not least the people themselves.34 holiday resorts, spas and places to relax, pure culture, national parks, blossowing rape, sun, wind and white sails - there is something for everyone to enjoy here.

Ostholstein finances

Generally only the central, state and local gouvernments can levy taxes. The county council does not levy any taxes apart from a hunting tax. Although with a yearly budget of round about 150 million € the income out of the hunting tax, 86 thousend € plays a very small part. Money is allocated to the county by the centra, state and local governments, some appropriated to fulfill certain tasks. As you can seethere is a certain dependance between the different bodies which makes cooperation inevitable. The county has to manage its assets and its income by following the principles of efficient and economical housekeeping, making sure that it fulfills its asignments in a effective and cost-saving way. The biggest item in the budget over 50% is for social safeguards!
